Case Study:
School Toilet Remodelling and Upgrading

Project Overview

Dabinett were instructed by a school in Cumbria, to redesign the existing toilet accommodation.  Problems had occurred with the closed off nature of the facilities which were leading to problems between students.

The  existing facilities were dated, with previous refurbishments offering little change to the layouts or students use.

The school hoped for a change in layout would aid, and prevent, social problems.

Project Requirement

The school needed to update the eixsting toilet blocks across the school.  However, problems with the existing layout of the toilets and closed off nature meant the school wanted to improve the situation.

The teaching team asked for a design to provide individual private WCs that could be used as unisex toilets in the future, and to open up the circulation area.

The corridors were cramped and created an oppressive environments which were outdated compared to modern provisions.

Timescales were tight.  The first inspection of the facilities was in February 2023, within six weeks initial designs had been produced and budget costs provided, giving the teaching team options, allowing for a tailored project.

Project Outcome

Tendering was completed competitively, with Dabinett overseeing the sealed tender process.  A full set of drawings, with detailed schedule of works and specifications ensured contractors priced on a like for like basis.

By the end of the summer holidays all works were completed, ready for the term to start.

The new toilets provided a high specification fit out, utilising robust fixtures and fittings, but ensuring the new areas were not too utlilitarian and aided in improving behaviour.
